So this is a simple one, a great way to personalize any space, especially kids’ rooms. Colored, wooden letters to spell out your child’s name (or any other word you’d like).  The only thing is sometimes it’s hard to find not just the type of font, but once you’ve found it, how to make the darn things sand up straight!  I’ve been asked this a few times, so I’ll share a few simple tips.

THE LETTERS:  I went to many, many different stores looking for the type of lettering which suites the room, and most places offered what I think looks more like country-western type of lettering or a font that was too swirly.  I was looking for a more simple, modern type of font, and it just so happened that my local dollar store carried what I was looking for, but these letters were really thin so wouldn’t stand up on their own.

MOUNTING:  Easy solution, I just took a bunch of popsicle sticks, cut them, glued them together in a stack (about 4 layers deep) and hot-glued them to the back/base of each letter, and voila! Now they stand!

COLOUR: This can be personalized with any colour of paint or pattern. Basic acrylic colours can be found at most local dollar stores, but I’m a bit more fussy about the exactness of desired shades, so I opted to head over to a hardware store and bought a can of Behr sample paint for 5$. That way I was able to get the exact shade I was looking for.

Supplies:

  • Wooden letters
  • Paint
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Good scissors (to cut the sticks)
  • Glue gun
