DISPLAY BOARD

display board monkeyWhen I was nearing the end of my pregnancy and decorating my soon-to-be daughter’s room, I knew exactly what I wanted on the wall above the little shelf. I wanted a large display board, the ones made of fabric with the nice ribbons criss-crossing it, so I could display some pictures and keepsakes. My search was fruitless due to two things: 1 – I could barely find any of these in the stores for some reason, and when I did they were too small, and 2 – I had a vision of exactly what I wanted it to look like in terms of colour & pattern, making it almost impossible to be satisfied with whatever I found in stores.  So, I chose to make one.

Supplies:

  • fabric (make sure it’s ironed!)
  • ribbon
  • cardboard
  • sewing pins (I didn’t want the pins to show so I used the ones with small pinheads)

Instructions

  1. First, I cut out a square piece of cardboard to the size of the mural which I wanted.
  2. I covered the board with my fabric and stapled it along the back. I actually double-layered the fabric because it wasn’t the thickest cotton. Also, if I were to do this again, I would probably glue-gun the fabric in place because fabric and cardboard was a little tricky to staple together.DSC_0008
  3. I laid ribbon across the fabric-covered board in a criss-cross fashion.  I used two different colours: a darker pink ribbon going diagonally in one direction, and light pink ribbon going diagonally in the other direction, so the two shades always intersected. I pined the ribbon intersections right through the board, and was sure to fold the pins flat against the back of the board once through. I even covered the folded pins on the back of the board with tape to make sure they wouldn’t scratch the wall. If I had enough spare fabric, I could have actually covered the entire back with a layer of it at the end of the project.
  4. To be able to hang the mural, I stapled a thick ribbon across the top, so that it could hang off a mounting hook on the wall.
  5. Once hung, I added on a few sparkly fun ornaments (star, butterflies). These were actually Christmas ornaments I bought on sale on boxing day – isn’t it great how ornaments are made in any colour and style now? I got these from Bouclair Maison.
